An interview with Stephen...

What is your earliest ambition you can remember?

Wanting to go to the moon...until I thought about it and realised there wouldn't be any Lego

Did you go to a state or private school? Did you go to University or straight into work?

State for me (which is why my children go to private school) and then I went straight to work.

Who is your idol?

Don't have one

Who is your mentor?

Sadly it's the past tense... Sandi Brown OBE RIP

How physically fit are you?

Compared with most blokes my age I am fairly fit - I go to the gym 3 times and run 20k a week.

Which leads to greater success, hard work or ability?

I've met lots of people with loads of ability who do not succeed as they don't work hard enough. Contrary to the celebrity myth - you achieve nothing without loads of hard work

What is your IQ?

No idea - I get by

Which famous person are you most like?

I'd like to say Steve McQueen for looks, Kenny Dalglish for his football ability, Usain Bolt for his speed, Stephen Fry for his wit, John Peel for his musical taste, Bill Shankly for his ability to galvanise, Gandhi for his humility, Fred Astaire for his moves, Ian Curtis for his lyrics, John Donne for his poetry, Nico Ladenis for his chicken and lemon tart ability.

If you could see any musician live - whether alive or dead - who would it be?

I've seen New Order play 30 odd times...always think there's someone missing

Do you consider your carbon footprint?

Yes and fret about it all the time, I fly a lot, but use trains as often as possible and drive a modestly horsed car.

What was the first car you owned?

An Austin 1100 - it blew up the first day I had it and was nearly as modestly horsed as my current charge.

What's your biggest extravagance?

My family and they deserve every penny!

How politically committed are you?

Worryingly less than I used to be and less than I should be, as the issues are as big now as when I was looking at the moon clutching my Lego - why is it all so vanilla, all about spin and wrong doing?

Name one skill you don't possess that you wish you did?

Being able to sing and I'm Welsh... but I could give you a long list

If you could have a super power, what would it be?

Patience - I see it is a super human skill alternatively the ability to travel anywhere in a micro-second which I frequently try in the aforementioned steer

Do you have more than one home?

Yes

You're going to be stranded on a desert island and can take three things with you - what would they be?

It depends. If I'm on my own, then a boat, map and phone. On the other hand if I was with my family it would be great food to cook and a fishing line and lobster pot for replenishment, sun cream and all our music and books and I'd hide the flares and satellite phone until we had read, listened, talked, eaten and laughed enough.

If you could own one thing that you don't currently possess, what would it be?

A time machine

What and where is the best restaurant you've ever eaten in?

Recently Roberta's in Brooklyn not because of the food alone - although it was good - just because of its sheer exuberance and attitude and love. Although on the same trip Le Bernardin wasn't shabby!

What keeps you going?

The fear of failure or coffee whichever I think of first

What is your greatest achievement to date?

Somehow having a beautiful wife, two gorgeous kids and a family and friends - who all seem to love me no matter what I've put them through - incredible!

What has been your greatest disappointment?

Not being able to run a hundred meters in 9 seconds

If a movie were made about your life so far, who would take the lead role as you?

Bernard Manning......not

If someone wrote a biography about you, what would the title be?

Next

What was the last book you read?

A Lee Child's trash novel... I've read most now... 20 minutes before sleep.

What would your 20-year-old self say to you now?

What happened to the man who was going to play in an indie band and play football and direct films?

What ambitions do you still have?

Too many to write down - I've only just started

If you lost everything tomorrow, what would you do?

If it was possessions start over, if it was my family crumple

If you had to rate your satisfaction with your life so far, out of 10, what would you score?

3
