Deloitte succinctly outlined the UK’s labour situation yesterday.
Most of Europe has more people in work since the pandemic, but not Britain.
Why? Summarised quickly;
- Early retirees
- Hybrid/home working
As employers, most are recognising retention of staff is critical.
But when it comes to hiring, there still seems to be a mandate on core technical skills.
If you are struggling to find the right person, focusing on other areas may give you the answer, examples being;
- Hire someone ready for the next step up, not looking for a sideways move (this may mean some training & development)
- Hire focused on values, not technical skills (again some training & development)
- Hire local. Something that was not widely on peoples radars until recently was travel costs – if someone has a 15 minute walk to work as opposed to a 1 hour drive this can be the difference of £thousands to them and any offer you make
- Apprenticeships, apprenticeships, apprenticeships
Deloitte’s closing remark is we are looking into the new norm. This may mean our historical hiring methods need to adapt.
