Get paid to shop...
Ok, perhaps we aren't talking about shopping all day, every day. However a key part of this role is to get supplies for the development kitchen. Sometimes this will be standard ingredients from the factory, at other times it will be new ingredients from the retailers.
At certain times of the year you will visit all the major supermarkets and fill your trolley with everything that your competitors are making, bring it back to work, cook and serve up so that everyone can see what is new out there.
This role is so diverse, you really won't get the chance to be bored. One day you will be helping to pack up new product ideas so they can be taken to the customer for tasting. The next day you could be at the Head Office of one of the retailers, cooking up samples and setting up the room for the tasting meeting.
Your knowledge of competitor activity will build up over time as it will be you who goes out to check out new releases, long standing lines and products that have been taken off the shelves. Maybe you can't imagine this now, but you will become an expert in the product ranges that the retailers stock and the key seasons - Christmas especially - will be times of great excitement as you wait to see what the competition will launch. (You'll have to taste these too and help grade how good they are - hopefully you like food!).
In fact, all joking aside, the ideal person for this role will be a foodie. You enjoy eating, can offer opinions on what makes each particular product good, and eventually you will be the key person who assists the Chefs in their development of competitive ideas, based on the successes and failures of the past year's new launches.
