Zero Scores for Welsh Hygiene

A number of food outlets in North Wales have been hit with the lowest possible rating for hygiene by the Food Standards Agency.

The venues, according to food safety officers, had hygiene levels so poor that they need to make urgent improvements – or face being shut down. With a rating range between 0 and 5, with 5 being the best, four premises managed to get a score of 0 recently.

Poor Hygiene Levels

Two of the badly rated properties were in Denbighshire, with the remaining two split across Conwy and Gwynedd.

If you are looking out for these premises and want to avoid them, we have the full information for you here. The first up is a free house in Pensaran, Conwy. The Park was last inspected on February 19, 2016, on which it received the 0 rating. You will find it on Marine Road.

The first of the Denbighshire businesses to receive the low score is a pizza place in Prestatyn. The Pizza Pan is a small takeaway venue on Bastion Road. It was given the rating on the 30th March 2016 after being inspected on that date.

The second in the county is an Indian restaurant and takeaway. The Simla Tandoori Restaurant in Llangollen received its rating on September 15, 2015, and thus is due for a new check-up sooner than the others. It is also the largest premises on the list, covering 4 and 5 Victoria Square.

In Gwynedd, the sole offending premises is Mr Balti, a takeaway house in Tywyn. It also functions as a restaurant. This mid-sized venue can be found on College Green, and was inspected to receive this zero rating on April 28, 2016.

These are the only four venues in North Wales to get the lowest possible rating at present. However, it is worth noting that a substantially larger portion of the food outlets in the area have a rating of 1 or 2, which is still not considered optimum.

Standards of Inspection

The food safety officers who were looking into the premises have very clear guidelines on what they must look for. Their checks include the way that food is prepared and how hygienically this is done, as well as looking at the condition of the building itself. They also look at the procedures which are carried out by the company in order to make sure that the food is kept safe during storage, preparation, and sale.
