ABP Invests in Scottish Site

ABP Invests in Scottish Site

ABP have announced that they are planning to invest £17 million in redeveloping their processing plant in Perth, Scotland.

The red meat processor will be renovating the whole facility, improving production, and adding 80 new jobs to the facility workforce.

Beginning new era

The redevelopment plans were announced by Fergus Ewing, the Cabinet Secretary for the Rural Economy and Connectivity. They include an extension and upgrades to many of their existing facilities within the factory. These include the chilled storage area, staff amenities, maturation and meat production area, and dry goods storage.raw fish steak with herbs and spices on

The project was supported by the Scottish Government’s Food Processing, Marketing and Co-operation grant scheme. It is expected that 80 new food manufacturing jobs will be added at the site, though the exact positions have not yet been announced.

This is not the only upgrade to have been made at the Perth facility in the past year: the company has also made a £3 million investment in their cold storage and refrigeration areas, with more changes yet to come after this new investment.

“We look forward to beginning work and transforming Perth into one of the most modern facilities of its kind in the UK. The improvements will benefit everyone from our farmer suppliers through to our colleagues and the local economy,” said Tom Kirwan, the Managing Director of ABP’s UK division. “It will create 80 additional jobs on-site and provide significant employment during the construction phase.”

A strong history

ABP already has a strong history at the site in Perth, having first acquired it in 1997. It’s no wonder, then, they that have found the need to modernise and upgrade the facilities, bringing them to a more productive status.

They currently have 280 food jobs on site, and they also work with 1,600 farmers across the length of Scotland. They have also been hitting the headlines recently for other reasons, which signal great new achievements for the company. One of these is the fact that they have converted all of their beef and lamb processing sites to green energy.

Their attempts to reduce their impact on the environment have not gone unnoticed, with the Carbon Trust awarding the company quadruple accreditation. Speaking about this accolade, an ABP spokesperson noted that the Perth site was key to helping them reach this point. It was driven by the ABP Food Group sustainability strategy, which they dubbed ‘Doing More with Less’.

The strategy has set up a number of ambitious targets that they are looking to reach by 2020. They will be aiming to reduce the overall company’s environmental footprint over this time, following a number of different measures to do so.

One of their steps towards these goals was to open up a new plant in October 2017. The facility in Buckinghamshire cost them £22 million to set up, and uses only green energy. Their renewable division, Olleco, was responsible for setting up the plant, which will use waste from their production to create heat, power, and bio-methane. All of this will be exported to the national grid, at a rate of more than 100,000t.

Thanks to these efforts, they were awarded the Environmental Initiative of the Year prize at the 2017 Food Manufacture Excellence Awards. This prestigious claim is not to be sniffed at, and shows that the company are serious about evening out their impact on our planet. That makes them a very attractive prospect for any job seekers who want to follow their morals as well as earning a living, and for whom sustainability is an important issue to address.
